Measuring the Effectiveness of QA and Testing

Author: Tony Troppito

Determining a dollar return on investment for Quality Assurance and Testing is frequently difficult to do. Nonetheless, specific behaviors and outputs from the test and QA teams can provide tangible insight into the operation of these teams. This presentation describes how to determine that your investment in testing and quality assurance is paying off. Several things to look for in the behavior and output of the testing organization are described. Metrics and metric reporting techniques are reviewed. These metrics are correlated with good and poor behaviors in testing and QA.

Beyond Simple Testing: Growing Into Quality Assurance

Author: Tony Troppito

For many IT organizations, Quality Assurance starts as a small team of test people. Trying to grow from that starting point into a comprehensive Quality Assurance Program can be a difficult task. This presentation uses a real Case Study to describe how one company made the transition from a testing team into full blown Quality Assurance. A simple set of metrics is presented that demonstrates the quality gains realized as the Case Study progressed. The session interweaves the Case Study with more formal discussions of Quality Assurance, and ends with a discussion of how testing can be leveraged as both a debugging aid and a project management tool. The example and discussion points presented here can apply to any methodology, CMMI, ITIL, etc., as an organization moves beyond testing into Quality Assurance.
